On 9 November, I took part in the final of the John Kerr Award for English Song with my duo partner Jack Redman and was very pleased to come away with the £2,200 First Prize. Jack also won the Accompanist Prize, so it was a successful evening!
We performed a 25-minute programme of songs on the theme of night, covering each century of English song repertoire from the 17th to the 21st:
- Hubert Parry – Good-Night from English Lyrics, Set 1 (1881)
- Thomas Arne – The Fond Appeal (1745)
- John Dowland – Come ye heavy states of night (1600)
- Madeleine Dring – Holding the Night from Four Night Songs (1985)
- Benjamin Britten – Nocturne from On This Island (1937)
- Henry Purcell – Evening Hymn (1688)
Jack and I hope to give this set of pieces another outing soon — watch this space…
